The day I got caught shoplifting

Even though they're quite unsexy, we had to buy one of those shopping carts you see in movies being pulled by grumpy old ladies. Like this one:

Ours is as follows. It's just really useful when you buy lots of heavy things that are necessary on a daily basis, like milk, and juice. And wine.

Anyway, back to the story. At Monoprix, where we buy most of our groceries, they also sell these grocery carts, on the top floor of the building. So while Dianny was buying groceries, I went upstairs and picked out our grocery cart, and instead of paying for it upstairs, I thought I'd go back downstairs and just pay for it along with our groceries.

Here in France, you have to bag your groceries yourself, so as items are being scanned you have to bag them or put them into your cart. This can be a bit tricky when you're by yourself, because while you're at one end of the cash register giving your items to the cashier you have to be at the other end putting them into your bags or cart.

So as Dianny was passing items to the cashier, I moved down to the other end of the cash register with the shopping cart and proceeded to pack our groceries into our new cart. After every item was scanned, put into the cart, and paid for, we made our way towards the exit, and as we're going through the doors, we set off the alarm. That's when it hit me: I did not pay for the cart.

A huge security guard approaches us and I try to explain that the problem is the grocery cart. I obviously did not make a good case, so he escorts me back to the cashier area. He wants me to unpack all the items from the cart and check them against the receipt. I explain again that the cart is new and that I just got it from their store but forgot to pay for it. He finds the plastic security device that's attached to the cart and removes it. I then pay for the cart and the guard sends us on our way, but not before suggesting that next time I pay more attention.
